In Mathare, alcohol distillation is common practice and a major driver in the local economy. The drink produced has been legalised but the process has not, making many people resort to illegal means of producing through bribery and coercion by police. Following an iterative process, involving interviews, field visits and discussions, I tried to present alcohol distillation from a different perspective. The use of distillation not as a moral problem stemming from alcoholism, but as a possible economic tool at disposal in low income settings. Using the drums, I did a demonstration on how they could be used for essential oil production. The short documentary is an investors take, on how to upscale this artisanal craft and support the local economy.
